Thatos Terrain Done Unreasonably Quickly

Who's got John Williams on in the background? Just me? Fast terrain projects seem to be becoming a bit of a specialty of ours. About a year ago, Charlie, Drew and I went in for a pair of boxes of boarding action terrain and painted it as a team . It was a success and renewed my own enthusiasm for terrain projects. I previously completed a very rustic non-imperial human settlement we lovingly dubbed Shit Town , but was annoyed at how interactive the terrain set wasn’t: while it was effective at blocking lines of sight, looking thematic and framing a board of miniatures well, the buildings were essentially impassable obstacles that models could not easily interact with, due to being closed off with awkward domed roofs. A normal response might have been to not sweat it, to enjoy the terrain I had, and to consider a future project in vein other than outer-rim settlement. Nonsense. The Necromunda team are putting out some absolutely glorious terrain, and one set we had all admired at di...

Painting a 40K Thunderhawk in a day

Yep, that's kind of what I did. When Mark passed, we discovered that he had a hobby backlog that could be best described as monumental.  Most of it has found loving homes and one piece of that backlog that I couldn't resist was the crashed Thunderhawk tile.  This was something Forgeworld produced many moons ago at a time when I could neither afford or have a place to store it. Of course, by the time both of those conditions had changed, Forgeworld didn't make the tile anymore and I consigned that dream to the lands of impossibility so when one turned up amongst Mark's old things I immediately asked if I could take it. As a tile, unless you have a whole other set of tiles with which to use it it isn't the most versatile piece of terrain, but I'd always wondered if it could be converted into something like the old crashed aquila lander that GW once did. So, with tile in hand, I started out attacking it with a dremel.  Mistake.  I burned through two cutting disks j...

Review: Versatile Terrain's name plates

For today's niche* within a niche** within a niche*** within a niche**** I'll be reviewing the custom 3D-printed name plates I got from Versatile Terrain  for the Necromunda gang I posted earlier this month . In case you haven't heard of Versatile Terrain, they (or rather, he... pretty sure it's a one man band) prints off customised name plates for all the common base shapes and sizes. You submit your list of names, he prints them with a sexy 3d printer, then posts them to you. I was keen to pick some up (a) because I think they look cool, and (b) because they can optionally have 90 degree vision arcs notched in them, which is ideal for Necromunda. For clarity, I'll keep this review as short as possible, so let's get to it. The Good The website offers a wide range of base sizes, fonts, and plate styles. Despite this, I just went for the standard font and style, mostly because I think it suits my gang best. Preparation was extremely easy. After t...
