The Year of the Cog: Part Five - Heavy Support

As promised in the last Admech Post I've got the last model in the initial 1000 point Crusade Roster for you today. It a big 'un. We have K-44/4, an Onager Dunecrawler. As with all GW naming I ignore about half the name and just call it the Dunecrawler, or Spidey Tank. Which whenever gets mentioned on our Discord chats is automatically followed by at least 3 different and simultaneous renditions of the old school Spiderman theme tune. This has not stopped being funny yet. Following the standard template painting pattern for Akaros units the painting called for a mostly bone/white scheme. This was best achived using subassemblies. The legs, hull, commander, and shooty bits where all kept seperate and undercoated in the most appropirate colour. The hull was basecoated black and then sprayed Wraithbone, the legs black then Leadbelcher, the rest just got black. It means the bulk of the work is already done to a standard far higher than I can manage with a brush.      T...

Ogre Kingdoms: Rebasing Project Step by Step

Welcome, today we are going to be rebasing my entire Ogre army. The current basing is inconsistent across units. This is completely my own fault. The original basing I did in the dark days before I put any effort into basing whatsoever. Some of the units still had this original scheme, others had various different schemes but I couldn't settle on a single one. I settled in and did some research into an effective but low effort basing for them. Before I could get into the new scheme I had to remove the previous basing. Fortunately PVA can be reactivated by soaking it in water. Acrylic paints are unaffected by water which is great as I marinated my Ogres in a baking tray for roughly 60 minutes.   Once properly soaked you can see the PVA turn white again. This means it is ready to be removed.   Removal was nice and easy. First step is to simply scrape away the old static grass and tufts and what-have-yous. I used an old, blunt hobby blade and carefully just scraped it a...

Forest Basing Step by Step

I've had a bit of interest on how I do the forest basing that is on my Tau. In response I've put together a little step by step of what I actually do to get this:    So grab your basing bits and lets get started.  I've grabbed a couple of spare empty bases, just so I can show the method: I start by given them a solid base layer of Stirland Mud. This gives a nice textured surface to work up from. Leave to dry over night: Next up I use Vallejo Thick Mud - European Mud. This is a diffrent colour, more desaturated and has a less consistant texture with little random bits of grass and the like. It all adds to the random, which is what we are after as nature hates straight lines. If I had a model on the base I would also stipple some up on to the feet/hooves/claws/tracks etc just to help blend the model into the base. Do not use your best brushes for this: Once that has dried properly, again I tend to leave this over night, I superglue a few bits of stick, bark, and twig to the...

They're not just in the jungle...

... They ARE the jungle.  In a somewhat Stark contrast to Andy's take on the Tau, my vision of them is rather more utilitarian. I've gone for a very simple scheme indicative of the industrial war machinery of another regime that also believed in the Greater Good*. To add a layer of interest, and because I seem to always want to over compliate everything, I have pushed the boat out with the weathering and basing on these guys.     The main paint scheme is drab green and black. The Green starts with Death World Forest, then a wash/pin wash** of Athonian Camo Shade***, Elysian Green, then finally Ogryn Camo. The Black was Corvus Black everywhere but the deepest of recesses where I left the Choas Black undercoat showing, then highlighted with Eshin Grey and Dawnstone.    Next up was the weathing stage. This was achived by taking a very light colour and a very small brush and gently building up the chipping with tiny dots and stratches. This is time consu...

Frostgrave: The warband grows!

Jeff: Greetings fellow explorers of the City of Chilly Corpse Disposal Facility! We have been making a few more forays into the Frozen City and as a result my warband has grown even more than it was before. Time to share these bad hombres (and have a natter about winter basing at the latter part of this post). Owing to some well-applied violence and not a little luck in the early stages of the campaign I had wound up with what is colloquially termed All Of The Money. Thus I had much to spend to expand my warband and thought some pricey specialists would do the job. One barbarian, a templar and 2 treasure hunters later and the job was a good 'un. I've taken an inn (the "Ragged Duchess") over as my headquarters so I can have 11 fighters total in the warband and this fills all the slots. There's also the transient member of my warband, the model representing the succession of zombies all called Stinky Pete. First up we'll take a gander at the magnifice...
