Something Icky This Way Comes - Plague Marines and Cultists

Greetings fellow devotees of the Plague Father, even as I become more immune to our bloated lord's latest and most irritating creation I nonetheless serve him. By painting some of his most devoted servants, the Plague Marines of the corrupted Astartes. These are powerfully hard to photograph well... Yes, the latest "God Squad" of the Graven Star chapter of Word Bearers are complete and ready to share their special presents with you all! First, lets have a little natter about the Plague Marines kit and what I did with it. Once I realised how I was going to incorporate the various elite squads into the army I knew I wanted to use the Plague Marine kit to represent the Grandfather's chosen. Trouble is, the Plague Marines are... how can I put this politely... a little cartoony in places? Having a good hard stare at the sprue pictures I figured I could "dial them back down to 11" and make it so that they looked like they fitted in with the more restrained normal ...

Smelling a Whole Lotta Heresy on this one...

Greetings fellow seekers after forbidden knowledge! It's Word Bearer O'Clock once again on the ol' Beard Bunker (no rest for the wicked and all that). I've been painting more lads - yes I need more, shush you - steadily over the past few months but haven't been doing much in the way of photography. Well that changes today. We open our account with another fine mob of very dedicated lads and lasses: It is a well documented truth that I have something of a Necromunda fixation. I adore the game and the world and to be perfectly honest want to paint literally everything produced for it. That having been said... as I already own an Imperial Guard Platoon's worth of Orlocks, 20 Goliaths and have designs on more... I am looking for other ways to use the models so my collection doesn't become ridiculous. To this end I recruited the ever-so-devout Cawdor cultists, ahem, gangers, to be my seventh cultist unit. The irony that the style of the very devoted in the Imp...

Badged in Blood - Corpse Grinder Chaos Cultists

It's once more time to get down and dirty with the poor deluded souls who think the Gods of Chaos will provide for them. Yep! Cultist O'Clock again folks! What? No, I don't have a problem, YOU have a problem! Ahem. On with the show...

Children of Chaos - 40k Beastmen

Greetings fellow seekers after Primordial Truth, welcome to another Tainted Thursday. Today we are looking at a unit that kinda, sorta doesn't exist... ish.  These are an expanded unit of the Blackstone Fortress datasheet beastmen. I really wanted my Word Bearers to be a full-on "Chaos soup" with a wide variety of unit types and even species represented. So when I saw the datasheet for the beastmen and it said "unit size 4, only one of this unit can be used" I kinda went "huh". Wouldn't it be nice, thought I, if we were able to just say "sod that, I'm using multiples of the 4 all in one unit like every other datasheet and call it good". No sooner was that thought in my head than it's friend "wait, I only play with other narrative nutters, no-one will care" arrived. Having checked with the other bunker dwellers that this was indeed the case, I got on with the thorny problem of picking the right beastmen. Clearly the Black...

Hordes of the Faithful - Word Bearers Cultists

It's fair to say: I've got a bit of a thing for cults. Not content with painting 3k of Genestealer Cults I turn my eyes to the Eightfold Path and chose that most culty of legions: The Word Bearers. Having already brought you the Tannabheim IXth and the Corvid Cabal , today we're meeting some more Cultists following the Graven Star. How many? Oh, just another 30...

6 Hour Ambot!

Is your gang tired of a constant stream of slaying, pillaging and loot carrying? Do you need a giant robot with an en-trained Xenos insect brain to do your heavy lifting and face smashing but you’re too short of time in your hectic gang warfare life? Then you need, THE 6 HOUR AMBOT! Beautifully Painted. Might have taken a while to do though... When Games Workshop first showed the Ambot model off, I knew that I needed one in my life. I also knew that I didn’t want to use their relatively ‘factory fresh’ paint scheme because A) I’m lazy and B) I wanted mine to look battered and heavily used – like the piece of tunneling equipment it is. I wanted to get it painted quickly – preferably between the time I dropped my Son off at school and the time that my wife picked him up. The challenge was on – paint an Ambot in 6 hours. I did cheat a bit, the model was already assembled and primed black when I started and I did the basing after bedtime. In terms of a...

Sons of Betrayal (Necromunda Cult)

So, it was my turn to do a post, which is why it's late. In fairness, it wasn’t my fault: Malal made me put it off. In short, this is my gang for the upcoming Necromunda campaign that we will run as soon as everyone finishes their gang. A quick note about the models: I used the cultist models that were originally released in the Dork Vengeance box set back in 2012.   (Yeah, I’m only just painting models I bought seven years ago. My pile of shame is a terrible thing to behold.) Anyway, the truly great thing about the models is that due to their excellent sculpts, they kind of write their own backstory for you, which is handy when you’re dealing with a small unit game like Necromunda as back story for these characters helps bring them to life.  Most of the models are stock, with a couple of head swaps from the Empire flagellants kit. The Psyker is from the Blackstone Fortress game. In general, I really like these models. The sculpts and the poses are ...
